Antonio Barbagallo was born in Italy, where he went to school until he was 13 years of age. He received his BA (summa cum laude) from the University of Massachusetts, at Boston, where he studied under Concha Zardoya and Ricardo Navas Ruiz. He received his MA in Spanish and his D.M.L. (Doctor of Modern Languages) from Middlebury College (Vermont and Madrid), having been a disciple of Carlos Bousoño, Ramón de Zubiría and other distinguished critics and poets. He has done additional studies at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas (Madrid campus), at the prestigious Curso OFINES (ICI), Madrid, and in Saltillo, Mexico.

Before coming to Stonehill College in 1989, he lectured at Northeastern University (Boston) and taught English in Madrid for several years, at which time he was included in Who's Who in the World as an educator.

He specializes on Cervantes' QUIXOTE, having published more than a half dozen articles, and on XX Century Spanish Poetry. In 1990 he published a book on the poetry of Antonio Machado, and he has also published an article on the poetry of Pedro Salinas and Futurism. An article on the poetry of Pablo Neruda is currently at Press. He is also the author of a few articles on Spanish and English linguistics. In 1998 he published De vida o muerte, his first book of poetry, which earned first prize in 1995 in the Federico García Lorca poetry competition sponsored by ALDEEU (Asociación Licenciados y Doctores Españoles en los Estados Unidos). In 2000 he was included in the anthology Poetas sin fronteras, prepared and presented by Ramiro Lagos (Editorial Verbum, Madrid). His interests range from Medieval Italian literature, to Golden Age Spanish literature, to Hispanic and Italian contemporary poetry. He is currently writing poetry in Spanish and in Italian, writing a novel in Italian, working on a book on the QUIXOTE, and preparing an expanded edition of his book on the poetry of Machado. A bilingual edition of De vida o muerte (Life and Death Matters), translated by Richard Capobianco, is currently at Press (Verbum, Madrid, Winter 2003).
