The driving force behind the group is simply
the urge to play jazz. Ideas for what to play
come from all members and include jazz standards,
blues, bossa nova, some more modern pieces, plus
true improvisation built on nothing but chord
progressions. A great deal of the fun, education
(and chaos) results from simply discovering what
is out there (and how difficult it is to play it
right).
The group first played together as a quartet
(Craton, Horne, McCarron, Denome) in spring
semester, 2000 and supplied background
music for student art exhibitions in spring
and fall semester of that year. With Katie Conboy
as vocalist, the group has played for faculty
social nights, for the opening of the new Social
Space in the Commons, and at various College
events. As the college hires faculty interested
in playing jazz, the composition of the group
changes. We are constantly in search of musicians
and good music to play. If it happens to sound
good, so much the better, but jazz is like life.
It's a journey, not a destination.
